In the next four years the giant US computer group IBM will help the Spanish autonomous region of Extremadura migrate the procedures (business and otherwise) related to its health-care system to Linux-based solutions. These developments would affect 14,000 employees of the Spanish health-care organization Servicio Extremeno de Salud (SES) working in 14 hospitals, 107 health-care centers and some 300 local health information centers, IBM declared.
In the process IBM would be working together with the companies CESEC, Mestea, SAP and T-Systems, the computer company stated. The use of the WebSphere Business Integration Server Software to, for instance, automate hospital admission procedures or the processing of results of medical tests, which has the potential to reduce the number of unnecessary visits to the doctor, is designed to benefit patients in both clinical and administrative terms. All in all, physicians, nursing staff and administrative personnel are to be provided with a central access point to all the items of information they require. In addition the quality of medical care is to be improved by introducing an electronic patient's file and providing additional and enhanced diagnostic opportunities.
