Description: A vulnerability was reported in Microsoft Windows Media Player in the processing of PNG files. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.

The vendor reported htat Windows Media Player does not properly handle PNG files with excessive width or height values. A remote user can create a specially crafted PNG image file that, when viewed by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system with the privileges of the target user.

The vulnerability is similar to that identified in CVE: CAN-2004-0597. However, Windows Media Player does not use the libpng library that is described in CVE: CAN-2004-0597.

Microsoft credits Carlos Sarraute of Core Security Technologies with reporting this flaw.

Impact: A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target user's system with the privileges of the target user.

Solution: The vendor has issued the following fix:
